National Park Service Western Regional Director, Christine Lenhertz, signed the Golden Gate National Recreation Area's General Management Plan on January 30, 2015. The GGNRA issued a formal public announcement about the signing on February 9. The General Management Plan (GMP) provides the framework for the GGNRA's plans for the next 20 - 30 years on GGNRA lands in Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo Counties. The GGNRA reports that they did not make any changes to the draft final plan in response to extensive and comprehensive concerns from the public and local government in all three counties.

To read the final plan, please browse to https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nps.gov%2Fgoga%2Fparkmgmt%2Fupload%2FGOGA-GMP-ROD-w-all-APNDS_30JAN2015-2.pdf. Local advocates, including Crissy Field Dog Group (CFDG) and their attorney, Ash Miller, are conferring to determine next steps. See below for historical information about the drafting of the plan.

On September 6, 2013, the National Park Service issued an updated Draft Dog Management Plan/Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement, which spells out rules for dog walkers using Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). Some of the most notable changes include new off-leash areas at Fort Funston and Fort Mason, but more restrictions in other GGNRA areas. The NPS has extended the SEIS public comment period until February 18, 2014. This had been a request of Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi and Congresswoman Jackie Speier and numerous others.

Watch the video below to learn about the status of the plans and ways to continue advocating for a balanced approach to recreation in the GGNRA as of October, 2014.

Go to the Maps tab of the Resource Library to see maps that show on- and off-leash areas as they existed under the previous plan and the GGNRA's Preferred Alternative for the future of those areas, as proposed in the January 2011 draft.

Eco-Dog also provides information about responsible dog guardianship, essential for protecting and preserving off-leash dog walking in beautiful natural areas, and a resource library with more detailed information about subjects related to dogs and dog guardians.

There was a public meeting at the San Francisco SPCA on February 8, 2011 to explain how the new rule could dramatically reduce options for dog walking in the GGNRA, and what citizens could do to influence the outcome. View documents presented at the meeting by going to the Resource Library and clicking the EcoDog Docs tab. You can also watch video of the meeting below.
